Wade Oval Wednesdays (Out and About in the CLE)

So, as a lot of y'all know, I moved back to Cleveland in April.  Since then, I've been taking every chance to explore the area and get to know it.  Mostly, this exploration has been limited to the Wineries on the far east side, but I totally do get out downtown and on the west side from time to time.

Most recently, I headed out to University Circle for Wade Oval Wednesday for my future sister-in-law's birthday.  It was totally awesome.

I actually drove down there from my office and parked in the Cleveland Institute of Art's lot for $10 (literally the ONLY money I spent - for an entire night out!) and walked the short bit to Wade Oval, just in front of the Botanical Gardens.
I was so surprised to the see the number of people out! There was so much going on - the #ThisisCLE sign, food trucks everywhere, beer and wine stations, and the stage set up for the entertainment.  Kids were everywhere playing catch and running around, families were settled in with blankets, camp chairs and coolers, and the place was so alive.

My family and I set up a blanket right in the middle of things. We brought a picnic for the birthday party full of yummy goodness.  So, what do you bring for a birthday picnic in Wade Oval?  We brought all sorts of goodies - I love eating finger foods for dinner, so this was right up my alley!  It was simple, fresh and really good.

Here's our menu:
  • Shrimp (and cocktail sauce)
  • Cheddar, Colby Jack and Muenster cheese
  • Raw veggies (Carrots, Red and Green Bell Peppers, Cherry tomatoes)
  • Hummus and Pita Chips
  • Small Baguette Slices and Triscuits
  • Crab dip
  • Spinach and artichoke dip
  • Wine (including 534 Red from Kosicek Vineyards in Harpersfield, OH and Starry Starry White from Karma Vista in Coloma, MI)
  • Cupcakes from SandraSue Cupcakes out of Mentor, OH (various flavors including their Caramel Apple Pie cupcake that was literally to die for!)

During and after dinner, we got to listen the "Cleveland Bluegrass Orchestra" play blue grass and some fun classical music.  The group was made up of members of the incredible Cleveland Orchestra and was a total joy to listen to.  They played songs from O Brother Where Art Thou? and some Vivaldi.  It was completely lovely.

We wrapped up the night with presents for the birthday girl and headed to the cars just as the Lego movie was starting.

Wade Oval Wednesday's ran every Wednesday through the summer starting on June 11.  The last event is this Wednesday, August 27th.  For more information about parking and how to take public transportation to get there, check out the WOW website.

I love events geared towards revitalizing the community and Wade Oval Wednesday is a totally great one.  Can't wait for next year!
